Star Trek Presentation Script & Notes

 Star Trek Presentation Script

Black Hole: One of the things that fascinated me about watching the 2009 film was the use of black holes as plot devices. Completely by surprise, the audience finds out that events from the future are driving the conflict in the present day for the younger Spock. While they cannot be artificially created like in the movie with the use of red matter, there are accuracies to black holes in the real world. First, time dilation is a real thing that occurs within black holes. Regarding Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, time can shift based on location in a gravity field. Black holes have an immense gravitational pull, so if you were to be sucked into one, moments would pass for you without aging while years have passed in the world we know. The same thing happens between Spock and Nero. This event causes an alternate reality, which I will get into on the next slide, but also breaks one of the founding rules of time travel; that is what black holes are; vessels for time travel. The original Spock eventually meets a younger version of himself. They share the same background, but once they interact the movie refuses to destroy the world once they are together despite the Spock on Delta Vega warning against this occurrence. Finally, the depiction of the black holes in the film are accurate. A bright disc around the hole is accurate. This is called an accretion disk in which matter is swirling into the hole and is the point light cannot escape.

Alternate Realities: One group of people briefly mentioned in the episode of Star Trek: Picard we watched were the Borg. Through my deeper research on the effects of alternate realities on the universe of Star Trek, these people knew of alternate realities through something called transtemporal awareness. Picard later does the same bridging of alternate realities in his own timeframe of the later 2300s, at one point traveling to three different timelines in the past, present, and future. There are plenty of instances of alternate timelines created and explored through all iterations of Star Trek. Timelines can be formed and interacted with each other like we see with the two Spocks in the movie. Without a new timeline formed in the black hole between Nero and the older Spock, James T. Kirk gets to know his father in the current reality like he did in other realities.
